Twenty-Four Hours a Day:
AA Thought for the Day
Alcohol is poison to the alcoholic. Poison is not too strong a word, because alcoholism leads eventually to the death of the alcoholic. It may be a quick death or a slow death. When we go by liquor stores and see various kinds of alcohol all dressed up in fancy packages to make it look attractive, we should always make it a point to say ourselves so we’ll never forget it: “That stuff’s all poison to me.” And it is. Alcohol poisoned our lives for a long time. Do I know that since I’m an alcoholic all liquor is poison to me?”
Our Thoughts: Use it as a daily affirmation. When you see triggers or temptations, remind yourself, “That’s poison to me”—not only physically but spiritually and emotionally. Share this perspective with others in your recovery community who may need a reminder of the power alcohol once held.
Meditation for the Day
I must somehow find the means of coming nearer to God. That is what really matters. I must somehow seek the true bread of life, which is communion with Hum. I must grasp for the truth at the center of all worship. This central truth is all that matters. All forms of worship have this communion with God as their purpose and goal.
Our Thoughts: Start your morning with quiet reflection or a few minutes of silent prayer. Seek connection with your Higher Power and allow that connection to guide your actions throughout the day.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may meet God in quiet communion. I pray that I may partake of the soul-food that God has provided for me.
Our Thoughts: Use this prayer to ground yourself before meetings, service commitments, or whenever you feel overwhelmed. It reminds you that spiritual nourishment—rather than alcohol—is what truly feeds your soul.
Additional Prayers:
Prayer to your Guardian Angel
Angel of God,
my Guardian dear,
To whom God’s love
commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
To light and guard, to rule
and guide. Amen.
Our Thoughts: Say this prayer for protection and guidance, especially when facing difficult situations or temptations. It can also be a beautiful prayer to share with someone struggling in your community. We encourage our James Club Recovery members to say this prayer or prayers like it.
The Divine Praises
Blessed be God.
Blessed be His Holy Name.
Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man.
Blessed be the name of Jesus.
Blessed be His Most Sacred Heart.
Blessed be His Most Precious Blood.
Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar.
Blessed be the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete.
Blessed be the great Mother of God, Mary most holy.
Blessed be her holy and Immaculate Conception.
Blessed be her glorious Assumption.
Blessed be the name of Mary, Virgin and Mother.
Blessed be Saint Joseph, her most chaste spouse.
Blessed be God in His angels and in His Saints.
May the Heart of Jesus, in the Most Blessed Sacrament, be praised, adored, and loved with grateful affection, at every moment, in all the tabernacles of the world, even to the end of time. Amen.
Our Thoughts: Use this as a gratitude practice. Each line can remind you of the blessings that sobriety brings—healing, love, and purpose. Consider saying it after an AA meeting, acknowledging the Higher Power that helps keep you sober.
Buddhist prayer (February 17th, 2025)
If you have accepted the doctrine of ahimsa without a full realization of its implications, you are at liberty to repudiate it. I believe in confessing one’s mistakes and correcting them. Such confession strengthens one and purifies the soul.
Our Thoughts: Apply the principle of ahimsa by practicing kindness and compassion toward yourself and others. Confession and making amends, as AA teaches, is also a path to purifying the soul. If you slip up, acknowledge it, correct it, and move forward with a clear heart.
My Daily Bread
Dear Father of Light, when my mind is overclouded with confusion or anxieties, grant me the light of Your grace, so that I may fix my eyes on Your truth and walk safely towards Heaven. In Your Church I will seek Your guidance as You desire me to do. All the powers of hell are helpless against me, if I will only be wise enough to seek Your truth and use the strength of Your holy Sacraments. Amen.
