Interview with Adam Bartista: A Journey of Recovery and Resilience
Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Adam Bartista, one of the newest graduates of the James Club program and a participant in our Pay Forward initiative. Adam’s journey is a testament to the power of community support and personal determination. After facing significant challenges due to addiction and incarceration, Adam has emerged as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
Adam's Story:
Adam’s struggles began at a young age. He started using drugs when he was just 12 years old, and by 19, he found himself in prison—a stark reflection of the vicious cycle of addiction that had taken hold of his life. Adam describes himself during those years as a “functional addict,” managing to work while simultaneously engaging in criminal activities to fuel his addiction. His addiction not only affected him but also had a profound impact on his relationships. Adam was in a tumultuous three-year relationship with a partner who also struggled with addiction, and together they welcomed a child into the world while still in the grips of their substance use. This period of his life was marked by chaos and despair, as he faced repeated court orders to attend various rehabilitation facilities, none of which proved successful in breaking the cycle.
Turning Point:
After a series of setbacks, Adam found himself back in prison, which ultimately led him to the James Club. Reflecting on his time there, Adam emphasizes that the program provided a different approach to recovery—one that was rooted in community and shared experiences. “Nobody likes living in a halfway house,” he admits, “but it was absolutely necessary for my
recovery.” The sense of community he found among others who had faced similar challenges was invaluable. Adam credits the consistent group sessions with helping him gain perspective and clarity. “I couldn’t have gotten clean by myself,” he shares. “The support from people who
understood what I was going through made all the difference.”
The Pay it Forward:
Despite his progress, Adam faced significant obstacles upon entering the Pay It Forward program. He found himself feeling discouraged and without resources. However, through the James Club Recovery Foundation, he received a scholarship that provided him with the support
he needed to continue his journey.
Now, after approximately a year in the program, Adam is thriving. He is proud to report that he has been sober for 17 months as of January 4, 2025. His hard work has paid off, as he has secured a full-time job at a tire shop and has successfully regained custody of his son.
Conclusion:
Adam’s story is one of resilience, hope, and the transformative power of community support. He expresses deep gratitude for the role that the James Club and the Pay It Forward program have played in his recovery. “I am so thankful for my journey,” he says with a smile. “I never thought I
could turn my life around, but here I am, and I’m proud of who I’ve become.” We are incredibly proud of Adam’s achievements and continue to support him as he navigates this new chapter in his life. His success story serves as an inspiration to others, proving that with the right support and determination, recovery is possible.
